On the heels of the Milkman Alnico speaker release, I wanted to make a Ceramic version of my speaker pretty much immediately. I understood the high material cost of an Alnico magnet of that size - and knew this would put it out of reach for some players.
The JBL E120 speaker was JBLs final guitar speaker after discontinuing the K120, and it had a few "improvements" such as greater magnetic flux in the voice coil gap, and a less expensive ferrite magnet. However, an E120 was also very heavy at 23lbs. The Milkman Ceramic speaker, in contrast, is only about 1lb heavier than the Alnico version coming in around 16lbs. Not light, by any means but for a speaker than can handle 200 watts and sounds like a JBL I think we did pretty good with this one.
Because of the higher power rating of the Ceramic speaker, it will be the standard speaker in my high wattage steel guitar amplifiers. The sound of JBL speakers has been missing from guitar amplifiers for more than a generation, I am beyond thrilled to be bringing that sound back.
The Milkman Ceramic speaker is hand made one at a time in San Francisco, California.
